The design of allotment gardens is a part of "Urban forest" project in Brunnshög area, Lund. Allotments, arranged in circles, could be located along the paths leading from Lund city towards Kungsmarken nature reserve in the outskirts. Small "islands", scattered in the flat agricultural landscape, would allow to experience the contrast between openness and enclosed protected spaces. Allotments could be many different sizes and types, arranged around existing ponds, farms or trees.

Thoughts about cracks in the asphalt, inspired by Nimis

Architecture is usually perceived as the opposite to nature; it portrays something regular, strict, sharp, hard, cold. Even though most of people desire to have nature’s qualities around their living space, our everyday environment has been built the opposite way. Only with a present trend of sustainability the situation is changing, and we try to implement new qualities to our car-orientated “modern” concrete cities. The qualities which we are constantly struggling to achieve in our built environments are usually present in most of natural places. We want it to look natural and organic, feel inviting and relaxing, also playful and stimulating.

I believe that spontaneous, intuitive, instinct-led act of birth rewarded Nimis with many extraordinary features: individuality, organic shape, playful and interactive character. So maybe those qualities can be achieved in built environments if we change our attitude towards designing process? Can we start looking at human nature as a part of nature, and involve users into a constant process of changing and creating our everyday spaces? In this paragraph I will discuss the issue of freedom of individual expression in urban space.

Nimis reminded me of a Finnish architect and Professor Marco Casagrande, who developed the concept of Urban Acupuncture. He writes:

“Urban acupuncture is ruining the industrial surface of the built human environment. Ruin is when man-made has become part of nature. A weed will root into the smallest crack in the asphalt and eventually break the city. Urban acupuncture is the weed and the acupuncture point is the crack. The possibility of the impact is total, connecting human nature as part of nature.”

M.Casagrande encourages releasing the instincts and sees it as a way to turn city into a living natural thing, which he calls “compost”. He claims that “people are ruining their built human environment by being themselves”. He also says that you don’t really need to be strong (maybe he means - educated?) to do that: “As the city reflects control and strength, the urban acupuncture has to be weak in order to break the machine.”

M.Casagrande’s theory opens the door for uncontrolled creativity and freedom. Each citizen is enabled to join the creative process, feel free to use city space for any purpose and decorate his environment according to his taste. Then existing order of previously built industrial cities will be ruined by human nature and turned into a “compost”. And ruin is not a product or a final goal, - it is a continuous process.

Similar ideas were expressed in Sven-Ingvar Andersson’s text “Letters from my Henyard”. “All kinds of societies in all times have established ways for limiting individual development. <…> How then can we justify the aesthetic double standard which imprisons the user behind a nice façade and prevents him from the exuberant display and marking of the place that could be the true folklore of industrial society?”, - he writes. Who decides which user is allowed to shape the city and which should stay behind the façade? If the city has to work equally for everyone, why do we rely on few persons who decide how we want to live?

There are some people, like Lars Vilks, who don’t really want to take somebody’s rules. By building Nimis, he “ruined” the place that had already been listed as nature reserve, which means that visitors were not supposed to see any human traces there. Another great example of going against system is Graffiti movement. Graffiti artists sneak to some ordinary grey places in the city and turn them into highly personalized spots, often carrying important messages. Talents and capabilities of artists vary, and usually it’s not a very high level art. Therefore society tends to treat them as hooligans. However there are some exceptions, such as already worldwide known graffiti painter Banksy, constantly surprising London’s citizens with his astonishing and insightful drawings. His great talent has earned him recognition among citizens, and his pieces are treated and priced as a high value contemporary art rather than random outlaw drawings on the walls. Regarding rest majority of the painters, the war against society’s rules, neatness standards and towards recognition is continuing.

Banksy’s story also happened with Nimis. It was rejected in the beginning as an outlaw construction and “damage” in a beautiful natural landscape, until it became a visiting spot because of its positive qualities, and people started to appreciate it. However, government hasn’t legalized it yet, even though I believe it’s a matter of time. Eventually, society chooses. Not successful enough personal initiatives are being wiped from the surface, leaving room for the better ones.

When it comes to buildings, there is also a room to express yourself. Not everyone is made to live in somebody’s designed ordinary cells. There is also a great variety of vernacular architecture in the world, which is created by its direct users. It is originally based on local traditions and knowledge gained through generations. Vernacular architecture is usually built of local materials and influenced by local climate and culture. However, as the world is becoming global and information is much more accessible, nowadays much bigger variety of things can influence people, and respectively much bigger variety of pieces can be called vernacular architecture. The definition can vary, but I perceive it as instinct-led design, influenced by local conditions as well as a mixture of visions and ideas transmitted from a global world.

To continue previous thoughts, “vernacular city”, if it existed, would be an example of complete freedom and user-created world, or a perfect “compost”, as M.Casagrande would say. While our ordinary cities could be compared to suites, limiting people’s freedom by some society standards, most of vernacular architecture examples, contrarily, do not set strict rules for neatness and behavior. Therefore they create unrestrained ambience and welcome bigger variety of people. Also because of the same reason people feel unselfconscious there, and space inspires them for creative activities. But how would a “compost city” look like and do we really want it?

One could say, slums are examples of big vernacular neighborhoods. Even though it’s usual to refer to them as worst development examples ever, they hold a lot of good qualities as well. If you look closer, informal cities are in many ways more contemporary than old ones. For example, very interesting and unexpected portrait of Dharavi slum in Mumbai, India, was described in book “Dharavi: Documenting informalities”. After a research it turned out that a huge part of local production comes from there. Everybody is trying to find a niche to develop his own business, so eventually slum dwellers produce high quality textiles and leathers as well as take care of recycling whole city’s waste. Besides that, people have a great community life, take care of each other and have a strong sense of belonging in the place. Life in the slum is much more flexible and dynamic than in ordinary city; and there is a lot to learn from it. However, I must agree that most of aspects of life there are not acceptable.

While a slum is an example of whole vernacular fabric, there are also some vernacular “diamonds” in ordinary environments. Nimis reminded me of a wooden house, built in Archangelsk, Russia, which was considered to be the tallest wooden single family house in the world, until it was demolished in 2008 because of threat of fire. The owner and builder was an ordinary workman Nikolaj Sutygin, who suddenly became rich and wanted his house to illustrate his status and impress neighbors. The awful wooden “castle” of 12-15 storeys high shaded the whole town and overwhelmed all former landmarks. So what do I find good about it? I think this kind of landmark reflected Archangelsk’s culture and its people so naturally and far much better than any other, carefully designed by architect, could. This house is a great example of “being yourself”, which M.Casagrande indicated as a power of destruction.

All in all, I must conclude that even though there are some good qualities and inspiring examples of unrestricted processes, they also witness that complete freedom of creativity can lead to unorganized sprawl which neither beautifies the city neither improves life quality of the “creators”. One can argue that it’s a question of their mentality, but I believe that everywhere it would look the same if some order hadn’t been set. It’s obvious that some common rules must be established, and I perceive it as urban planner’s, architect’s or landscape designer’s task. At the same time, I believe that the room for individual expression is essential.

Miestamiškis | Urban Forest

With rapidly spreading cities, it becomes a challenge to preserve natural habitats inside them and make wild areas easily accessible for people. The project in Brunnshög, Lund, is based on an experimental structure, balancing between the forest and the city, which could be a tool to combine wilderness with urban spaces as well as create a distinct, contrasting mood and character for Brunnshög area.

Lund is basically surrounded by open agricultural lands, so by introducing the forest, also new kinds of habitats, enriching local biodiversity, would be created. Brunnshög area is open and windy, so forest would help to create a good microclimate there. Moreover, greenery would definitely improve people’s life quality and could serve for educational purpose. As a designer, I found forest an interesting material to work with, because I saw trees as a landscape element, helping to weave different typologies into continuous fabric. My idea was to use forest as a curtain, which introduces element of surprise and allows to experience many contrasting moods by discovering new spaces.

Darbelis, darytas kartu su Martynu Radzevičium ir Gintaru Duoba Kauno S.Dariaus ir S.Girėno aerodromo atgaivinimo vorkšopo "Sparnai" metu 2010m. birželį. Teigėme, jog geriausias paveldo saugojimo būdas yra jį naudojant, nors tai ir sukelia šiek tiek triukšmo...

Pagerinamas susisiekimas: atkuriama geležinkelio atšaka į šiaurinę aerodromo dalį, projektuojami dviračių takai, susijungiantys su Aleksoto dviračių takų sistema. Pėstiesiems bei dviratininkams numatoma Transatlantinė alėja, jungianti funikulierių su aerodromu, patogiam atvykimui iš centro.

Tai sukurtų geresnes sąlygas klestėt vietiniams ir apžvalginiams skrydžiams, padidintų aerodromo patrauklumą aviaturistams. Jiems projektuojamas aviakempingas ir lėktuvų peronas gražiausioje bei ramiausioje aerodromo teritorijos vietoje - šiaurės vakarų dalyje. Manome, jog kempingas, esantis šalia upės ir miesto centro, iš kurio būtų galima stebėti skraidykles ir kylančius oro balionus, būtų patrauklus ne tik aviatoriams, bet ir kiekvienam drąsesniam turistui.

Sukuriamas aerodromo vizualinis kontaktas su miestu. Prie pagrindinio įvažiavimo į aerodromą projektuojamas aviacijos muziejus, kurio prieigas ženklina orlaivis, matomas nuo Veiverių gatvės. Aerodromo pakraščiuose naikinami menkaverčiai pastatai ir krūmynai, atveriamos perspektyvos iš pagrindinių gatvių.

Miestiečiams sudaroma galimybė ne tik švenčių metu, bet ir šiokiadieniais apsilankyti aerodrome. Prie pagrindinio patekimo į aerodromą suformuojami Aleksoto gyventojų bendruomenės namai su sporto ir kultūros centrais. Visiems atviras patekimas į Aviatorių atminimo parką, išsiskiriantį kinetinėmis skulptūromis, iš kurio galima stebėti kylančius lėktuvus.

Palei S.Dariaus ir S.Girėno gatvę atstatomi senieji angarai bei aerostotis.

Šiaurinė dalis atvira gyventojams bei turistams, norintiems pasižvalgyti po miestą iš dirižablio ar oro baliono ar leisti laiką stebint skraidykles, parasparnius, jėgos aitvarus. Čia veikia aviamodeliavimo klubas bei vaikų skraidymo mokykla.

Naujai projektuojamos stebėjimo tribūnos, maitinimo įstaigos, salės bei kempingas taip pat didina aerodromo patrauklumą renginių organizatoriams.

Nenaudojamoje aerodromo dalyje įrengiam motokroso ir keturračių trasą, kuri būtų atvira motosporto entuziastams kiekvieną dieną. Nevykstant skrydžiams, siūlome į aerodromą įleisti šonaslydžo bei traukos lenktynių („drifto“ ir „drago“) mėgėjus ir motociklininkus, drumsčiančius miesto centro ramybę. Aerodromas taptų vieta, vienijančia skirtingas subkultūras, kurias jungia meilė motorams ir adrenalinui.

Kalno anatomija | Anatomy of the Hill

Pastatas – kalnas – organiška forma, tarpstanti gamtinėje aplinkoje. Architekto pjūviai susmulkina nerangų tūrį iki miesto mastelių, funkciškai skaido erdves ir atveria spalvingą kalno anatomiją.

Ryšys su aplinka
Projektuojamo komplekso tūriai netaisyklingi, banguojantys, tačiau tuo pačiu kompoziciškai „susideda“ į vieną kvadratą, kuris išlaiko gatvių linijas ir organiškai įsilieja į Palangos urbanistinį audinį bei gamtinę aplinką. Didelis parodų paviljono pastatas atsitraukia nuo gatvės, ir remiasi į už jo esantį parkelį ramiu, monumentaliu mediniu fasadu. Palei Dariaus ir Girėno gatvę esantys kavinės ir galerijos pastatai susmulkėja iki gyvenamųjų namų mastelio ir stilizuotais Palangos vilų tūriais darniai įsikomponuoja gatvės išklotinėje.

Sklypo sprendiniai
Pagrindinis patekimas į sklypą projektuojamas Dariaus ir Girėno bei Daukanto gatvių kampe. Kiti įėjimai ir aptarnaujančiam personalui skirtas parkingas numatyti iš Dariaus ir Girėno gatvės.
Išsaugomi visi sklype esantys želdiniai, įskaitant dabartinės „Kupetos“ kieme augančią pušį, kuri tampa svarbia komplekso kompozicijos dalimi bei naujojo kiemo akcentu.

Architektūriniai sprendiniai
Parodų paviljono kompleksas susideda iš trijų pastatų: parodų paviljono, galerijos (su informacijos centru) bei kavinės. Pastatai tarpusavyje sujungti požeminiu aukštu (jame numatyta ekspozicijų erdvė), dėl to kompleksas gali vieningai funkcionuoti ir šaltuoju metų laiku. Tarp pastatų esančioje erdvėje numatyta galimybė rengti koncertus.
Parodų paviljono didžioji salė, siekiant lengvesnio pritaikymo įvairiems renginiams, projektuojama vieno lygio. Ji gali būti pritaikoma tiek konferencijoms, koncertams, kinui, tiek parodoms, šokiams bei kitiems renginiams. 535 vietų salę bei dalį holo nesudėtinga transformuoti į kelias mažesnes uždaras sales (70, 90, 125, 295 vietų). Didžiosios salės stiklinis fasadas šiltuoju metų laiku gali būti atidaromas ir salė apjungiama su kiemo erdve.
Administracijos patalpos numatytos pastato pirmajame aukšte. Rūbinė, WC, persirengimo bei kitos reikalingos pagalbinės patalpos suprojektuotos rūsyje.
Galerijos pastate didžioji dalis erdvės skirta meno dirbinių ekspozicijai – pardavimui, iš ten tiesiogiai patenkama į didelę dienos šviesą turinčią ekspozicijos erdvę rūsyje. Turizmo informacijos centras taip pat numatytas galerijos pastate.
Kavinė su baru suprojektuota atskirame pastate per du aukštus.

Pastatų konstrukcijos
Projektuojamo komplekso pastatų pamatai - gelžbetoniniai monolitiniai. Parodų paviljono laikančios medžiagos - gelžbetonio sienos ir metalinės kolonos; perdengimas - erdvine santvarų struktūra. Kavinės bei galerijos pastatų laikančios konstrukcijos – blokelių mūro sienos, metalo kolonos ir sijos.
Pastatų sienų apdaila – medis. Sutapdinto stogo danga – skarda; apdaila – atitraukta nuo stogo dangos ažūrinė medžio lentelių konstrukcija.

Aikštė suskaidyta į 6 zonas: menų kalną, verslo tiltą, bendruomenės lauką, versmės lauką, nuotaikų sodą ir studentų kiemą. Zonos sukuria nuotaikų ir scenarijų įvairovę didelėje aikštėje, o tuo pačiu - dirba kaip vienas organizmas, siekiant sukurti gyvybingą erdvę.

Projekto vieta: Petrašiūnai, apleista industrinė zona prie Nemuno. Dauguma pastatų menkaverčiai, tačiau išlikę ir senovinių fabrikų, kaminų, įdomių industrinių įrenginių. Projekto idėja - prie upės sukurti patrauklią gyvenamąją zoną su multifunkciniu centru, tuo pačiu įsiklausant į kontekstą ir išskirtinę vietos dvasią.

Siekiant išlaikyti vietos unikalumą, nusprendžiau palikti vertingiausius čia veikusios industrijos ženklus: seną popieriaus fabriką (pertvarkant į "loftus"), kaminą (žymintį naujos mokyklos vietą), keletą kitų įdomesnių pastatų bei vietinės reikšmės bėgius, besitęsiančius išilgai teritorijos (jais galėtų važinėt turistinė - pramoginė drezina). Šiuos objektus naudojau kaip gaires, kurios padėjo suprojektuoti naujus pastatus bei gatvių tinklą.

Teritorijos centre suprojektuotas mažas uostas bei trikampė aikštė kartu su juos supančiais multifunkcinio centro pastatais turėtų tapti pagrindine žmonių susibūrimo vieta; tarp įdomių rekonstruotų industrinių pastatų įkomponuota alėja - prekybine erdve.

Site location: Kaunas, Petrašiūnai, derelict industrial zone on Nemunas riverbank. Most of buildings have no value, but some old factories and interesting atributes of former industrial devices are remained. The idea of the project was to create an attractive residential zone with multifunctional centre, at the same time sustaining an extraordinary spirit of the place.

To keep a unique character of the site, I decided to sustain most interesting signs of former industry: old paper factory (reconstructing into lofts), chimney (as a landmark for a new school), some other sightworthy buildings and local railway, going along the site (for new recreational railcar). These objects were my landmarks for designing a road net and new buildings.

A small port and a triangle square are designed in the middle of the territory; together with multifunctional centre buildings they should become a cosy meeting space for people. Alley, designed between interesting industral buildings, - shopping space.

Darbas darytas 2006 m. tarptautiniam architektūros studentų konkursui "Užmirštos vietos" (Vadovai: Linas Tuleikis, Jonas Audėjaitis). Kaip užmirštą vietą, kurią nutariau "gydyti", pasirinkau vaikų žaidimų aikšteles Šilainiuose.

Apleista erdvė tarp monstriškų pilkų daugiabučių užstatyta automobiliais, aplinka - nejauki, netvarkoma, nešvari. Senos aplūžę metalinės sūpynės vaikams nebepatrauklios, monotoniška sovietmečių statytų daugiabučių aplinka kelia depresiją. Tai tampa socialine problema: tiek suaugusieji, tiek vaikai vis daugiau laiko praleidžia namuose.

Projekto koncepcija - izoliuoti vaikus nuo nepatrauklios aplinkos. Kiaušiniai - vaikų erdvės bendravimui, sportui, žaidimams, kūrybai. Saugios erdvės kurti savo pasaulį. Simbolinė kiaušinio reikšmė ir akį traukianti instaliacija turėtų atkreipti visuomenės dėmesį į apleistų sovietmečio laikų rajonų gyventojų problemas ir paskatinti keisti savo aplinką.

Projektas laimėjo trečią prizą.

Project of "Eggs" was created in 2006 for international competition for students in Architecture "Forgotten places" (Tutors: Linas Tuleikis, Jonas Audėjaitis). I chose children playgrounds in district Šilainiai in Kaunas as a forgotten place, which should be healed with an architectural invasion.

Shabby spaces among old monstrous multistorey houses are occupied by cars; the surroundings are inhospitable, unkept and dirty. Old broken metal playgrounds are more dangerous than attractive now, monotonous views of blocks of flats, built in soviet period, - depressing. It becomes a social problem: not only adults, but also children prefer staying at home more and more often.

As a solution, children's isolation from inhospitable surroundings is proposed. The eggs are designed to be children's spaces for communication, sports, games or creative work. Safe spaces to create their own world. Symbolical meaning of an egg and a catchy view of installation should attract attention to problems of people, living in gloomy neighbourhoods, which are very common in Lithuanian cities, and encourage to improve living conditions there.

The project won 3rd prize.
